What people ask us

Repair & Maintenance
What is the balance test and why does it matter?
With the opener disconnected, the door is lifted by hand. If it moves with light effort and stays put at waist height, the springs are carrying its weight as designed. If it drifts up, sinks or feels heavy, the springs are out of step with the door and the opener has been doing the lifting. That strain shortens the opener's life and can defeat its reversal settings, which is why balance is checked first. Garage Door Safety Inspection
Do you adjust the springs during a tune-up?
Springs are inspected and lubricated during a tune-up, and the balance test tells us whether they are carrying the door's weight properly. Changing their tension is a separate, deliberate job: the door is clamped to the track, winding bars are used on a torsion spring, and the technician works from a stable position. If the balance check shows the springs need adjustment or replacement, you receive that as its own recommendation with its own quote. Garage Door Tune-Up
Should I choose nylon or steel replacement rollers?
Both work when matched to the door. Steel rollers are durable and cope with heavy doors but run louder; nylon rollers with sealed bearings are noticeably quieter and need less attention, which suits an attached garage under a bedroom. What matters more than the material is the stem length and wheel size matching the hinges and track, and replacing all the rollers together so the door rides evenly on every one. What is a strut, and does a new section need one?
A strut is a horizontal steel stiffener fastened across the inside of a section to keep it from bowing. Wide doors, top sections where the opener arm pulls, and bottom sections that take knocks are the usual places for them. If your damaged section had a strut, the new one gets a straight strut refitted or replaced. If a top section bowed because it never had one, adding a strut is part of putting it right. Can worn rollers make the door come off its track?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to replace them before they fail. A wheel worn oval, a bent stem, or a short stem sitting loose in a double hinge lets a section drift until the wheel climbs onto the track lip; from there a bump or a gust can carry it out entirely. A door hanging crooked is a far larger repair than a set of rollers. Fresh, correctly sized rollers seated in a squared track are what keep the door where it belongs. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Why does the door pop or click at the same spot every time?
A noise at a fixed height points at the joint passing through the curve at that moment. A cracked hinge leaf flexing open and snapping back, a pin rocking in a worn hole, or a roller stem shifting in a loose hinge all make a sharp report as the load transfers. Because it always happens at one place, the technician can go straight to that joint and usually finds the hinge or roller responsible. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
What is the track made of, and what sizes are there?
It is galvanized steel folded into a channel that the roller wheels ride in. Residential doors almost always use two-inch track, with three-inch reserved for heavier or wider doors. The curved piece comes in a radius, commonly 12 or 15 inches, that sets how much headroom the door uses. Replacement pieces are ordered to the same profile, gauge and radius as the rest of the set. Can I lift the door by hand while a cable is off?
Leave it. With one cable slack the door is being carried on one side only, so it is unbalanced and may bind or drop unevenly when moved. The technician arrives with clamps and a method for taking the door's weight before anything is moved, and that is the moment to lift it. Until then a stationary door is exactly what you want. Is a smart, app-connected opener diagnosed any differently?
The mechanical and electrical checks are identical, since the app is just another control. What is added is the connection: whether the head unit is on the home network, whether the app reports a fault code you can read off your phone, and whether a door-position sensor or hub has lost its pairing. Because the wall control and remotes work independently of the network, a door that fails on every control is a hardware question, not a connection one. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Why does the door jerk or jump at the same spot every time?
A repeatable jolt at one point on the rail is usually a chain problem meeting a sprocket problem: a stiff link or a spread master link passing over worn sprocket teeth, so the chain rides up and drops a tooth. It can also be a burr or a splice plate on the rail where the trolley catches, or a roller on the door hanging up in the track at that height. The technician runs the door by hand first to tell the two apart. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Does the trolley need replacing when the belt does?
Not usually. The trolley is checked while the belt is off: its halves should part with the release cord and lock again, the housing should be free of cracks and it should ride the rail without play. A trolley that passes those checks stays and simply receives the new belt and a fresh clip. One that sticks or rattles is replaced in the same visit. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will a new opener make the door quieter?
A belt or direct drive with a soft-start DC motor removes most of the operator's own noise, and a level, well-tensioned rail removes the rattle. The door contributes its own sound through rollers, hinges and springs, so the technician looks those over during the balance check and can fit nylon rollers or fresh hinges at the same time. Together the two changes turn a morning rumble into a hum. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Can the existing tracks stay with the new door?
A replacement is planned with track designed for the selected sections and hardware. Door thickness, completed weight, roller position, available headroom and operator location can all affect compatibility. Using the matched track package lets the sections and counterbalance operate as the system was designed, with geometry that can be checked during installation. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
When should installation wait for other work?
The project may be sequenced after framing repairs, masonry work, floor correction, electrical preparation or removal of an obstruction in the travel zone. Identifying that dependency during measurement protects the selected door dimensions and attachment plan. The proposal can separate door work from tasks handled by another trade, with a clear condition that must be ready before fitting begins. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How is the required wind pressure determined?
The value comes from the applicable building-code process and project information, often with input from a designer or municipal building official. Reference wind pressure, exposure, building height, opening size, wall location, importance category, and internal pressure can contribute. A street address or a general weather description alone is not a complete design basis. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Can windows be added without losing privacy?
Yes. A higher window row, textured glazing, tinted options or decorative inserts can introduce daylight while limiting direct views into the garage. The useful choice depends on interior sightlines and what sits near the door. Window dimensions and weight are included in the door specification, and their pattern is aligned with the panels and nearby exterior windows. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
